Leon Alex (Löwinger Sándor)

Worker

pastel, charcoal, red ochre paper, 33.8 x 25.4 cm

Leon Alex's frequently explored themes were related to industry and the making of the ,,new man”, the proletarian, who through his work manages to liberate himself. This message seems to be channeled by bestowing the worker with the face of Lenin himself.

Vladimir Lenin, regarded as the greatest revolutionary leader and thinker since Marx, fought to achieve a socialist revolution led by the working class and to form a Revolutionary Party based on Democratic Centralism. His ideology is considered a prelude to the establishment of communism. Claiming to achieve Marxist humanism, he actually created the first totalitarian dictatorship in history.

In addition to the relief elements, the characters are also largely represented by orange, a procedure often used later in realistic socialist art, namely an attempt to suggest that the worker becomes one with his work, that he merges with the work he practices, losing his individuality.

The work integrates Leon Alex's tendency to look for characters through which to reproduce social issues. One of the artist's favorite themes is industry and its effect on a person. We can also look at this work as a representation of the „new man”, of the proletarian who through his work manages to free himself and earn a living. Such an approach seems to be highlighted by the red background of the paper, as well as by the features similar to those of Lenin that the artist lent to this unknown worker.
