Jándi (Léderer) Dávid

Two nudes

pastel, paper, 49,5 x 50 cm

In Jándi Dávid's work, the artist draws with volatile and impulsive brushstrokes, taking control over the represented nudes, directing their forms by the power of his metallic colors. The posture that the characters adopt are not natural and relaxed ones, but rather submitted in a constructional pattern. In this large composition, the artist exposes the complexion of the flesh, while the background explodes with energy. He uses the two bodies to express a whole range of emotions to which the viewers can relate.

The faces of the female nudes are obscured. Their identity is nuanced, thus it can be erotic, sullen or melancholic, as they can be whoever the viewer wants them to be. It is said that a face you are not able to see is full of possibility. An image of women turning away gives the viewer permission to do something denied in life under normal circumstances: to stare. Since they were captured in movement, it remains impossible to know whether they were aware that someone was looking at them, they remain innocent of the observer.

In this composition Jándi succeeds to convey the possibility of two concepts which viewers often confuse: nudity and nakedness. While nudity means to show off one’s body in a sexual way to attract attention and remain open to the judgment of others, nakedness strives to be one’s true self without care for how others judge her (or his) body.

In the foreground of the composition there are two female nudes placed, having their backs turned on us. The female nude is in a standing position, holding the hair of the sitting woman. The flowing, downward lean of her arm comes in parallel with the inclining branch of the tree above them. The figures are depicted in light shades of gray, while the landscape in the background is accomplished in vibrant, strong colors (yellow, green, pink, blue). This value contrast gives depth to the composition and in the same time positioning the women much closer to the viewer, almost as if they were tangible.
