The Portrait of Katz Márton

oil, canvas, 41.5 x 37 cm

Stylization, distortion or abstraction of form can be found in almost all modernist movements and as a result, a challenge that modern artists have had to face has been to adapt their style to the genre of portraiture. It can be observed that many modern artists become a little more traditional when they paint someone that we, as viewers, have to recognize.

Although the features of the face are captured with an academic precision, the artist remains faithful to his personal style, especially in the special manner in which he harmoniously juxtaposes strongly saturated colors.

As it happened, for example in the impressionist group, the painters from Baia Mare will represent their colleagues in works, in this case, the work belonging to one of the most famous painters of the school, Ziffer, who pays homage to a portrait of his colleague, Katz Márton.

The composition illustrates the portrait of the painter Katz Márton, using the vibrant world of saturated colors and shapes, typical for Ziffer ' s works. The warm patches of color from the portrait glow in the ray of light coming from the left. This light is in contrast with the cold brushstrokes of the shadows from the lower corner of the scene, yet it does not divide the work, but instead it gives a playful touch to it. The cold - warm contrast achieved with complementary shades bring to life the face of Katz Márton, turned to the side.
