The Abduction of the Sabine Women

oil, canvas, 100,5 x 121 cm

In the mythology of the founding of Rome, the tribe of the Latins, led by Romulus, is in the difficulty of not having enough women to become their wives. Following failed negotiations to make marriage alliances with other tribes who feared that Rome would become too strong a rival, the Latins ended up kidnapping thirty women from the Sabine tribe.

In general, for this particularly popular subject in art history, artists have opted for very dynamic compositions, in which female characters jerk violently from the arms of men, leading to construction axes, usually divergent. However, Jándi opts for a tense, but very compact composition.

The characters intertwine sensually with each other, in a bodily struggle that seems more symbolic than simply violent. In the rendering of these powerful characters, both men and women, one can observe the lasting influence that the Renaissance art of some like Michelangelo had on Jándi.

At the top of the pyramid composition, the artist chooses to place a horse, a choice that Picasso will make when dealing with this subject in a work, related to "Guernica".

In Jándi's version of the Abduction of the Sabine Women the composition is built in a pyramidal and compact form, in a dynamic style, with bodies and limbs intertwining with one another. At the top of the pyramid there is the head of a horse, looking as if he is squealing in horror, hinting at the suffering of the women. Although in contradiction to other artists depicting this theme, Jándi's version does not insinuate the violent deeds that the women must have endured. His characters look sensual and powerful, with strong lines and brushstrokes, depicted under the influence of the Renaissance, in a naturalistic, celebratory way, where the human body is explored through eroticism.
