Painters at the colony

pastel, black paper, 32,5 x 47,5 cm

One of the most famous colonies of painters in the history of art was the Barbizon School. French artists who wanted to escape the hustle and bustle of Paris and paint in nature took refuge near the Fontainebleau forest. In this context, outdoor painting appears.

The Baia Mare school appears at the end of the 19th century and although the modern art practiced by the artists gathered in this place was not focused on the study of nature, it can be seen how Jándi David brings the forest to the forefront of the work meant to depict the colony.

While nature is brought to the fore, the painters themselves are reduced to ghostly figures, who can barely be distinguished, giving the work a slightly melancholic and alienating air, reinforced by the fact that the image, made on black cardboard, is very dark.

In a post-impressionist tradition, the bright areas of the work are created with the help of saturated colors, which do not necessarily coincide with the real color of the represented objects.

The pastel work completed on dark paper uses the color of the paper for compositional economy. The scene is accomplished with minimal means, using powerful light - dark contrasts, specific for the artist's practice. Another contrast used in this work is the contrast of complementary colors, specifically between the green and reddish brushstrokes. The light coming from the sun from the left side of the composition casts a warm red glow to the horizontal display of the forest ground, which is systematically interrupted by the broad tree trunks depicted is hues of green.
