Szüle Péter

Landscape with clouds, 1912

oil, cardboard, 41.5 x 31 cm

Throughout the twentieth century, Impressionism continues to have one of the strongest influences on landscapes. In Szüle Péter's work we can see the use of a simple but expressive contrast of complementary colors ...

... the fast and pasty brush strokes from which the shapes of the clouds are built

... the increased interest in color, as well as the fact that the work captures a simple landscape, unadjusted to a complicated composition, probably painted in the open air.

However,as in many landscapes, romantic influences still creep in, when the colors of a sunset are a little too emotional or the possible characters a little too melancholic, and Szüle Péter's work has a common trait with an older style: Dutch Baroque landscapes .

A field landscape of which three-quarters of the composition is occupied by the cloudy sky. The work is done in the open air, with two small ornamental figures in the field. The composition is freshly treated with a dynamic brushing.
