Adler Ernő Kaba Wolf Elijahu

Carriers, 1946

oil, cardboard, 70 x 51.8 cm

Although the female nudes have received some more attention from art historians, male nudes have also occupied a very important place in art since antiquity. Although the preferred types of male nudes change from century to century, the strong man, the typology of the Atlant, who carries all the weight of the world on his shoulders, appears recurrently in every era.

Unlike the communist iconography of the interwar period, in which the workers appeared as tormented, oppressed and powerless beings, Kaba's work, made in 1946 - in the transition phase from communism as a revolutionary ideology of the opposition, to communism as a regime of power - begins to portray heroes and not just victims.

In addition to the athletic and powerful bodies of the working heroes, the virtue that is often captured in communist art is cooperation, action in accordance with the masses. Unlike the classic Atlant, Kaba also captures how a less athletic worker helps another one by putting his weight on his own back.

The composition with four male characters presents a social subject. The accentuated expressiveness of the dark shapes and tones contributed to the profoundness of the work. A monumental character occupies a large area of the composition, with this method the artist expressing his compassion for the workers' problems.
